Tokyo Japan Museums
It is no surprise that the largest collection of Asian art in the world is housed in the Asia Art Museum in the city of Fukuoka. Since its opening in 1871, it has been named after several museums, including the National Museum of Tokyo, the Japan Museum of Contemporary Art and the Japanese Museum in Tokyo. Not far away in Ueno Park, the National Museum of Tokyo is the oldest museum in Japan, as old as the British Museum in London or even older than the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Given that it is considered one of the largest art museums in Asia and one of the largest art museums in the world, I was surprised to learn that its second largest museum after Tokyo is located in Fukuoka.
Ueno Park is home to the Japan Museum of Contemporary Art and the Asia Art Museum, both located in Uenos Park and the second largest art museum in Fukuoka after the National Museum in Tokyo.
Other outstanding museums include the Japan Museum of Modern Art, the only building in Japan designed by the renowned architect and modern art architect Yoko Ono, and the main building of the museum.
The gallery, which was founded in 1959 and is located in the Museum-Zoo complex in Ueno Park, remains a very popular attraction in and around the city, attracting well over 1 million visitors each year. The Tokyo National Museum, which has a collection of over 100,000 works of art from around the world, is one of the largest and most prestigious museums in Japan and the second largest in Japan after the Tokyo Museum of Art.
Tokyo Photographic Art (TOP) Museum houses more than 33,000 works by Japanese and international artists in three galleries. Private collections show works by artists such as Takashi Miike, Takahiro Yamaguchi and Yoshihiko Kojima.
Also in Ueno Park is the Tokyo National Museum, which houses a collection of more than 100,000 artworks from Japan and around the world.
The Suntory Museum of Art is one of Japan's most beautifully designed museums, focusing on traditional and visual art. It is housed in the former headquarters of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in Tokyo and also houses the world's largest collection of modern and contemporary art. It was the first art museum to emerge from the ruins of World War II and has since expanded into a department of modern, contemporary and modern art from Japan and around the world. One of the most unique museums in Japan is this impressive institution. Although this museum is the first in Japan to be dedicated to contemporary art, it is scheduled to close by the end of 2020.
The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo will be closed from February 29 to March 15 and will close on March 16. Other institutions affected by the closure include the Tokyo Art Museum, the Japan Institute of Contemporary Art (JICA) and the National Gallery of Japan. At one end of the park is the statuesque Tokyo National Museum, and there is a small museum collection, including the Nezu Museum. Given its profile as a cultural conservator in Tokyo, I think this museum is another must-see - do it, but there are a number of smaller museums and galleries in the city, such as the Tokyo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which will give you an intimate insight into the history of Japanese art and culture. If you are interested in art, culture, history or even a little history in general, I highly recommend it and it is worth your time.
